Looking back at 2024

Throughout 2024, our AI for Sustainability Transformations initiative sparked powerful conversations at five key events, each designed to explore how AI can drive positive societal change and ethical knowledge co-production. From Critical AI Literacy for Action Researchers to Participatory AI for Community Engagement and Indigenous Perspectives, we created spaces where diverse voices could shape the future of AI.

We welcomed thought leaders such as Kimberly Becker from Moxie, Alex Tveit, and Norman Valdez from Sustainable Impact and Community Foundations of Canada, who shared their expertise on ethical and inclusive pathways for AI.

From urban resilience to arts-based ocean governance, our Dialogue Series became a dynamic space where researchers and practitioners came together to exchange insights and spark collaboration. These conversations opened new pathways for innovative solutions to today’s pressing challenges.

A heartfelt thank you to our partners, University for the Planet and One Ocean Hub, whose support made these transformative dialogues possible.

Preparations for TC/ESG 2025, our 7th biennial conference in Johannesburg & Kruger National Park, are well underway. During this period, the TCX Experimental Extension also made its debut in York, setting the stage for dynamic exchanges & collaborations leading up to TC/ESG 2025. With gratitude, we acknowledge the ESG Project, Wits University, and the University of York for their role in shaping and supporting this transformative event.

We’re also excited to share that our Systems Education Catalogue has been refreshed and updated! If you’re curious about exploring transformative education in 2025, this is the perfect place to start.

2025 holds immense promise for learning, collaboration, and action. The recent approval of the IPBES Transformative Change Assessment in Namibia is a reminder of why this work matters. Transformative change is being recognized as essential for addressing global challenges, but it’s also deeply personal and often requires resilience and persistence. We are honored to welcome Co-Chair Karen O’Brien and IPBES Chair David Obura as keynote speakers at TC/ESG 2025 in Johannesburg and Kruger National Park on August 18-21. This conference will anchor our efforts, alongside the continued evolution of the AI series and Dialogue Series, which will explore new themes. We’re also launching the Coral Reef Project and the Ethics-Impact Community of Practice, opening new frontiers for transformative action.

Stay tuned for more opportunities, events, and ways to engage with our growing community throughout the next year. 2025 is promising to be a truly eventful year!
