Who We Are
We are a global community of action-oriented researchers and reflective practitioners who support transformations to a sustainable and regenerative future. We do more than theorize change — we are developing new leadership practices, institutional arrangements and participatory techniques to bring desirable transformations to life.
Our community consists of experienced academics and professionals who work in a wide variety of organizations, including sustainability-oriented academic programs, government and intergovernmental agencies, research institutes, and agile non-profit organizations, consulting firms, and foundations. We support organizations that innovate to promote social-ecological change.
We are closer to a professional association or community of practice than a mass-membership organization: we create high-level exchanges between people who possess expertise and experience.
We are situated at the midpoint between a practitioner group and a scientific group. We both develop and are informed by process theories of transformation and seek to refine and extend these ideas by putting them into practice. This requires more than science, so we integrate diverse ways of knowing, interacting, and shaping the world around us, including creative and anticipatory knowledge, practical hard and soft skills, and lived experiential knowledges that help bridge understanding across geographical and cultural divides.
While we engage with a wide range of scientists, practitioners and stakeholders, our focus is on innovative structures and processes and the practical knowledge of people who hold space for developing and scaling transformative innovations.
Our Journey: Over a Decade of Transformations
The Transformations Community began in 2013 with a vision to create a global space for deep conversations on how transformation happens. What started as a conference series has evolved into a dynamic, practice-oriented network that connects research, action, and lived experience.
Milestones in Our Journey:
Launch of the first Transformations Conference, exploring transformation as an emerging theme in climate change.
Introduces the ‘unconference’ format, embracing participatory approaches and the complexities of human-planet interactions.
Redefines conferences as transformative experiences, integrating the arts and immersive learning methods.
Expands the dialogue beyond the Global North, emphasizing language justice, cultural diversity, and cross-sector collaboration.
Adapts to the pandemic with a hybrid, globally accessible model, deepening inclusivity and reach.
Establishes regional hubs, reinforcing the community’s commitment to localized, interconnected transformation efforts.
The first Transformations Conference in Africa, expanding dialogue and action in new contexts.
Beyond these events, the Transformations Community has become a dynamic hub for change-making. We bridge research and practice, support local and global initiatives, and create spaces for meaningful reflection and bold action. Through knowledge co-production, systemic change initiatives, and capacity-building programs, we are committed to shaping what transformation means and how it can be realized.
Our Approach to Transformation
At the Transformations Community, transformation is not just a concept, it’s a practice.
We create spaces for critical dialogue, collaboration, and action, ensuring that
transformation is both equitable and effective across different contexts.
Beyond Academia
We don’t just study transformation; we co-create it through partnerships with practitioners, policymakers, and grassroots organizations. Our community bridges theory and action, making transformation practical, relevant, and impactful.
Bridging Global & Local
Transformation happens at all scales. We connect local initiatives with large-scale systems change to create impact.By working across sectors and geographies, we ensure inclusive and context-specific solutions.
Embracing Uncertainty & Complexity
Real transformation isn’t linear. We navigate complexity, uncertainty, and shifting power dynamics to find new possibilities for change. We encourage experimentation, reflexivity, and creative disruption to challenge conventional approaches.
