Julia Leventon

Julia Leventon leads the Department of Human Dimensions of Global Change at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CzechGlobe). The department as a whole looks at the responses of people, policy, and politics to global environmental change. Julia’s research focuses on transformative change towards sustainability, with a focus on processes of political and policy change.

She is particularly interested in how political decision-making can fulfill principles of meaningful democracy while meeting the scientific imperative for urgent action. Julia’s career to date has been highly interdisciplinary, bridging physical and social sciences while exploring how knowledge systems shape and constrain opportunities for transformation.

As a result, she has made significant contributions to methodological development in sustainability science and transdisciplinary research practice and enjoys creating spaces for deep collaboration across epistemic communities. Julia is currently a Coordinating Lead Author to the IPBES Transformative Change Assessment, and contributed text on societal transformations to the IPCC AR6 WGII (Chapter 18 – climate resilient development).

Her current work is:

3. Mapping systems and leverage points for food systems transformation for One Health in FOSTA Health.

4. Increasing the visibility and uptake of social science and humanities (SSH) research in climate, energy, and transport research and policy in Europe in SSH Centre.

  1. Leading the PLUS Change project: Planning Land Use Strategies for Climate, Biodiversity, and Social Outcomes in a Changing World. This project works with 12 Practice Cases of land use planning and management across Europe, in creating participatory decision-making processes towards sustainable land use.

  2. Exploring decision-making changes for biodiversity and social outcomes in PLANET4B.
