On 2 October, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada’s new National Council on Artificial Intelligence, which will advise the government on its AI for All strategy. A coalition of civil society organisations, researchers and community leaders points out that the Council doesn’t appear to include meaningful representation from civil society, Indigenous Peoples or communities directly affected by AI.
In response, the coalition launched AI by All | L’IA Par Tous on 13 October. Alex Tveit (Sustainable Impact Foundation) and Norman Valdez (BrainTrainr) are among its leaders. The campaign’s open letter calls for meaningful civil society participation, distinct Nation-to-Nation engagement with Indigenous Peoples, and stronger transparency and public accountability. The campaign is focused on Canada, but it raises a question for AI governance everywhere: how AI can be governed with the people it is meant to serve, not only for them. Individuals and organisations can read and sign the open letter at aibyall-liapartous.ca. Organisations that want to get more involved can contact alex@sustainableimpact.is or norman@braintrainr.ai.
