Dr. Theresa Züger

Theresa Züger is an interdisciplinary researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). She investigates how AI systems can be designed to serve a common good. AI for the public interest means that the development and deployment of AI systems should not primarily aim to maximise profit, but to benefit society as a whole. This includes initiatives that promote sustainability, strengthen social inclusion and enable the reuse of their technologies through open systems. In addition, Theresa Züger addresses the societal challenges associated with artificial intelligence at the political, social and cultural levels. Her work contributes to an accurate assessment of the societal implications of AI technologies in terms of their opportunities and limitations, in order to support a well-informed democratic approach to AI.

Theresa’s recent work includes:

The research project Impact AI: Evaluating the social impact of AI systems for sustainability and the public interest develops a transdisciplinary auditing method to evaluate AI projects in regards to their contribution to public interest and ecological sustainability.

To bridge scientific analysis with practical applicability, the evaluation method developed will be made publicly available. In this way, Impact AI contributes to strengthening the sustainable use of AI systems and enabling informed decisions for technologies that serve the public interest.
