Founded in Belgrade in 1991, DAH Theatre Research Centre for Culture and Social Change is an independent theatre company working across contemporary theatre, dance, and visual arts. For more than three decades, DAH Theatre has explored how artistic practice can engage with social conflict, open spaces for dialogue, and contribute to personal and collective transformation.

Could You Briefly Explain The Driving Force/Motivation Behind Your Work?
The driving force behind DAH Theatre’s work is the belief that art, and particularly contemporary theatre, can be a powerful space and tool for dialogue, reflection, and positive social transformation. Our work is motivated by the need to engage with the pressing issues and challenges of society, while creating opportunities for people to question, connect, and imagine different possibilities for the future.
We are inspired by the exchange of ideas and experiences between artists, communities, and people from different cultural and national backgrounds. Through the combination of theatre, dance, and visual arts, we explore how artistic expression (contemporary theatre) can respond to social change, encourage empathy and dialogue, and strengthen connections within communities.
At the heart of our work is the question of how theater can contribute to building a more open, tolerant, and non-violent society. This motivates our continuous artistic research, our collaboration with diverse communities and international partners and projects, and our commitment to creating spaces where artists, young people, and audiences can learn, participate, and face contemporary social challenges together.
Where/How Has Your Work Engaged With Systems Or Transformative Change-Making?
DAH Theatre has engaged with systems and transformative change-making through more than three decades of artistic practice that connects contemporary theatre with social dialogue, community participation, education, and international exchange.
Our work starts from the understanding that social transformation is not only about changing institutions or policies, but also about changing relationships, narratives, perceptions, and the ways people understand one another. Through theatre, dance, and visual arts, we create spaces in which difficult social questions can be explored collectively and where different perspectives can meet.
Over the years, DAH Theatre has developed projects and performances that respond to issues such as war, violence, intolerance, exclusion, memory, human rights, displacement, and the challenges of living in societies marked by conflict and social division. We work with artists, actors, young people, educators, communities, and international partners, using artistic processes as a way to open dialogue and encourage participation rather than simply presenting audiences with predetermined answers.
Our approach is transformative because the artistic process itself becomes a space for change. Participants and audiences are invited to question established narratives, listen to experiences different from their own, develop empathy, and imagine alternative ways of relating to each other and to society. In this sense, our work contributes to change at several interconnected levels: individual, interpersonal, community, and cultural.
We also see collaboration and knowledge exchange as an important part of systems change. By working across cultural and national contexts, we connect local experiences with wider European and global conversations and learn from different approaches to social transformation. Our international projects, perfromances, festivals and partnerships allow artistic methodologies, experiences, and perspectives to circulate between communities.
Ultimately, DAH Theatre seeks to contribute to a culture in which dialogue replaces violence, diversity is understood as a resource, and people feel empowered to participate in shaping the societies they live in. Our ongoing commitment is to demonstrate how contemporary theatre can function not only as an artistic form, but also as a practical space for reflection, connection, participation, and social transformation.
How Can The Transformations Community Support Your Work?
We would value the Transformations Community as a space for connection, exchange, and amplification of DAH Theatre’s ongoing work at the intersection of contemporary theatre and social transformation.
In particular, we would welcome support in developing and connecting our work with new communities, artists, researchers, cultural organizations, and social-change practitioners who are exploring similar questions. We are interested in partnerships that can help us exchange methodologies, develop new artistic projects, and bring our experience from the Balkans into wider international conversations about art, peacebuilding, dialogue, tolerance, and community resilience.
We would also like to use the community to amplify concrete opportunities and projects developed by DAH Theatre, including new performances and artistic research, educational and participatory programmes, international collaborations, publications, and events.
Connections to potential funders, partners, festivals, and institutions working on related themes would be particularly valuable. Another important area is the sharing of knowledge. We would be interested in contributing our long experience of using contemporary theatre as a tool for dialogue and social engagement, while learning from other members about approaches to transformative change in different contexts.
Ultimately, we hope the Transformations Community can help us strengthen the networks around our work, reach new audiences and collaborators, and create opportunities for artistic practices to have a wider social impact. At the same time, we would like to contribute DAH Theatre’s experience, artistic methodologies, and perspectives to the collective learning of the community.
