TC23 Publication Opportunities

The Transformations Community is offering conference attendees three opportunities to publish their work

Publications

Social Innovations Journal

Special Issue 2023

Submission Window | July 14 - September 20

Start of Peer Review | September 20

Revised Manuscripts Due | November 13

Publication Date | December 14

The conference proceedings will be published in the Transformations Community’s third annual special issue of the Social Innovations Journal, a practitioner-oriented peer-reviewed journal (see our previous issues 2021 and 2022). The Social Innovations Journal chronicles innovative ideas and initiatives focused on sustainability, showcasing real-world experiences, meticulous research, and best practices from the innovators themselves.

Given the wide scope and practitioner orientation of this journal, we encourage you to submit your work in the format that would best communicate your ideas to the Transformations community, many of whom are transdisciplinary transformations practitioners whose work combines participatory diagnosis of systems challenges, knowledge co-production, and collective action. This may include thought pieces, reflections on practice, research papers, and/or guidance for community engagement strategies. Submitters will be asked to provide a peer review of two other submissions, and a team of associate editors will oversee the peer review.

Our special issue of the peer-reviewed journal Current Research in Environmental Sustainability will feature original research on the role of partnerships in transformative practice presented at Transformations 23. The special issue will showcase work from the conference's main theme, on the role of partnerships in transformative practice for sustainability, with a focus on ways to build partnerships that are more effective, inclusive, and transformative. Questions of particular interest reflect the 8 track themes of the conference:

  • How can we co-design processes and co-produce knowledge for sustainability transformations in ways that reflect our collective vision for a sustainable future?

  • What practices, narratives, and structures characterize the most effective transformative partnerships? How does this change with scale, from local place-based engagements to global networks?

  • What can transformations researchers and practitioners learn from Decoloniality and Indigenous philosophy and practice? How can we decolonize partnerships?

  • How does the diversity of knowledge, perspectives, cultures, disciplines, and narratives contribute to sustainability transformations? How can we build coalitions that respect diversity while pursuing sustainability transformations?

  • How can we build inclusive communities of practice that support transformation researchers and practitioners to be more effective?

  • What does leadership mean in the context of partnership? What capacities are needed to lead transformative partnerships?

  • How should we evaluate partnerships? What makes a partnership transformative?

  • What capacities do researchers and practitioners need to cultivate to be ‘good partners’?

Proposal Submission: Ongoing

Submission Process:

Prospective contributors are invited to submit a one-paragraph abstract to Bruce Goldstein at brugo@colorado.edu. This abstract will undergo a review by our editorial board, currently comprising Bruce Goldstein and Susi Moser, to ensure alignment with the special issue's scope and themes. If accepted, Alison Langestraat the Editorial Manager will follow up with an official invitation, which once accepted, will enable you to upload your article to the journal.

Upcoming Themes:

We encourage submissions that offer innovative perspectives and synthesis. While the themes are being updated, new ones will be introduced soon, reflecting sustainability transformations' dynamic and interdisciplinary nature.
