Abstract

The Transformations Community (TC) is a collective of sustainability action researchers and systems change practitioners. This article reflects on the insights from the 2023 biennial conference and the subsequent sensemaker retreat in Prague. It introduces the "four Ts" guiding principles: Temperance, Transdisciplinarity, Translocalism, and Transformative Learning, and discusses future trajectories for the community.

Introduction

The TC, at a crossroads of potential and challenge, is committed to transdisciplinary theories and practices. This analysis synthesizes discussions from a retreat held by “sensemakers” post the 2023 conference, focusing on the TC’s future.

Beginnings: The Transformations Community and Conference

Since 2013, the TC has been a nexus for transformative thought and action, organizing biennial conferences globally. The 2023 conference, a hybrid event, featured over 400 speakers and 700 attendees, emphasizing partnerships for a better future.

Sensemakers: Deep Reflection and Synthesis

A group of "sensemakers" engaged in deep listening and sensing during the conference, producing video reflections and synthesizing insights in a post-conference session. Their role was pivotal in understanding the conference's essence and charting the community's path forward.

Exploring Shared Commitments and Purposes: The Four Ts

1. Temperance: Balancing individual freedom with group coherence.

2. Transdisciplinarity: Integrating diverse perspectives and methods.

3. Translocalism: Fostering resilience across localities.

4. Transformative Learning: Facilitating deep shifts in understanding.

Community Priorities Aligned with the Four Ts

1. Decentralized Conferences: Fostering place-based learning and cross-boundary exchange.

2. Dynamic Digital Platforms: Curating resources for continuous engagement.

3. Collaborative Workspaces: Supporting shared insights and initiatives.

4. Strategic Partnerships: Aligning with transformation-oriented entities.

Foundational Meta-priorities

• Immediate Action Planning: Capitalizing on conference momentum.

• Governance and Growth: Engaging members in strategic planning and implementation.

Conclusion

The TC is poised to continue its journey at the nexus of academic inquiry and ground-level change-making. The sensemaker gathering has charted a clear path forward, emphasizing immediate steps, longer-term projects, and inclusive governance. As the TC engages its wider membership, it reaffirms its commitment to a sustainable, equitable, and regenerative future.
