Abstract

At the Transformations 2023 conference, a panel of past organizers reflected on the community's evolution and its role in fostering transformative change. They discussed the importance of community building, knowledge co-production, stakeholder engagement, and the need for a stronger collective voice beyond academia. This article encapsulates their insights and visions for the future of the Transformations Community.

The Journey of Transformations Conferences

The Transformations Conferences, since their inception in Oslo in 2013, have been pivotal in shaping the discourse around climate change and transformation. Each conference, from Stockholm's 'unconference' in 2015 to Santiago's global North-South dialogue in 2019, and the virtual adaptation in 2021, has marked a significant evolution in the community's approach. These gatherings have emphasized innovative formats, inclusivity, and adaptability to global changes.

Expanding the Community Beyond Academia

The panelists highlighted the community's expansion from academic circles to include a broader range of thinkers and practitioners. This diversification is crucial in fostering a worldwide dialogue on transformation. The community's role in bridging local initiatives with global systemic changes and overcoming structural barriers was also emphasized.

Embracing Inner Transformation and Youth Engagement

The importance of inner transformation and personal engagement was linked to enhancing youth involvement in climate action. The panelists stressed the need for adults to support the youth in navigating sustainable futures, moving from knowledge accumulation to proactive steps towards sustainability.

Navigating Uncertainty and Bridging Global-Local Gaps

The community is seen as a support system in navigating the unpredictability of societal change. Integrating a global systems approach to sustainability transformations is essential, with a focus on linking local efforts to global systemic change.

The Transformations Community's Role in Societal Change

The Transformations Community is envisioned as a catalyst for transdisciplinary research and reflective practice. The panelists called for collective action and emphasized the community's potential in guiding societal change, urging members to engage beyond academic circles.

Visions of Hope and Collective Reassessment

The panelists proposed ‘visions of hope’ that are regenerative and equity-enhancing. They emphasized the need for a collective reassessment of values and the interconnectedness of people and nature, challenging the notion of individualism.

Fostering Transformative Spaces Beyond Academia

The community's efforts in connecting change-makers and fostering transformative potential were highlighted. The emphasis was on community building that transcends traditional boundaries and polarized societies.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

The Transformations Community stands at a crucial juncture, ready to redefine transformation and embrace a human-centric approach. The panelists urged the community to champion collective action and nurture a community ethos that fosters global transformation. The Transformations Community is called upon to be a powerhouse in transdisciplinary research and practice, shaping a world rich with transformative possibilities.
